22 Sep 🚘 Ohio’s New Driver’s License Rules for Ages 18–20
Starting September 30, 2025, Ohio is changing the rules for young drivers. If you’re 18, 19, or 20 years old, you’ll now have to follow the same training requirements as teens under 18.
Here’s what that means for you:
✅ Required Training & Practice
- 24 hours of classroom or online driver’s education
- 8 hours of behind-the-wheel lessons with a certified instructor
- 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a licensed adult
- (Must include 10 hours at night)
🛑 No More Shortcuts
In the past, drivers over 18 could skip most of these steps. That exemption is gone. Everyone under 21 now has to complete full driver’s ed.
👥 For Legal Residents (Non-Citizens)
If you’re a non-citizen living legally in Ohio, these same requirements apply when applying for a limited-term license. Your license will still match the expiration date of your immigration documents.

The state wants to make sure all younger drivers have more training and real-world practice before getting on the road alone. More time in the driver’s seat means safer roads for everyone.
